The concept of "personal runway" is an extension of the idea that a runway is cash in the bank, divided by a monthly burn-rate of a startup. It is a measure of an individual's ability to withstand various negative events, such as cancelation by an online mob, and is important for maintaining ideological independence.   

Balaji Srinivasan suggests that web3 will ultimately solve this issue by allowing creators to own their content and social graph, which will be a financial unlock comparable to Deng Xiaoping allowing capitalism in China.
